Ascoli is the oldest town in the Region Marche. More than a researcher dates the first settlement in this area in between 8.000 and 5.000 BC. Later on a group of Sabini, in the first Millennium BC lived there and eventually merged with Piceni. Ancient Romans took control over the settlement and turned into a city in beetween 4th and 3rd Century BC.

Ancona comes 2nd in this unusual ranking. Its origin dates 387 BC. The founders arrived from Siracusa Sicily, but had clear Greek roots.

Fermo, our 'bronze finalist' was founded by Ancient Romans in 264 BC, even though there are many controversial theories that anticipate the origin to the Villanoviana civilisation first, followed by the Etruschian presence after.
