Encouraging signals are coming out of the Italian farming world. More than encouraging — a signal of real change.

Encouraging signals are coming out of the Italian farming world. More than encouraging.

The exodus that began after the Second World War, which impoverished many regions and left them unrecognisable, now looks like it is turning. More workers, more production, a larger share of the market.

We like to connect these figures with the idea that agriculture is the primary and ideal sector for supporting integration with workers from other countries, who bring different but equally appealing cultures with them. Social integration leads to better renewal of a territory and is a cornerstone of redefining life there. It creates a synergy between farming, sustainable development and integrated regional tourism.

Agriculture as culture means transforming the sector into a cultural and social ecosystem, where farming becomes a guardian of biodiversity and landscape, a driver of innovation and an instrument of social cohesion.

In short, Italy is moving from a vision of farming as mere production towards an agriculture that integrates economy, environment and society. This shift in paradigm restores dignity and prospects to the countryside, has reversed the trend of depopulation and opens up new opportunities for development.
